Avon Soft Start
- TCL are pleased to announce the development of a new
SMARTStart system for gas turbine DC starter motors.
TCL have designed this product to address the issue of aging starter
systems which rely on electro-mechanical timers and DC contactors.
These electrical devices have become unreliable and spare parts are
increasingly difficult to source.
The TCL SMARTStart system uses solid state components to control the
current though the starter to provide a more progressive increase in
current (soft start). This greatly reduces the stresses on the starter
motor, increasing life and reliability. The system provides a
reliable solution to starter motor control with sequencing control and

the appointment of a new Customer Support Manager:-
This role is key to the day to day functioning of the Customer Support
department, encompassing site services, customer training, spares and
repairs. Phil will bring his considerable experience of gas turbine
commissioning and field service to the role.

TCL are pleased to announce
the award of the following contracts during the last quarter of 2012: -
AES Kilroot Power Station – Control systems upgrade of a two twin Avon generator
sets rated at 29MW, to replace the aging governor and sequencer
equipment and provide a new operator interface at both the local and
central control room.
Jersey Electric plc – Complete new control systems for two Sulzer diesels
each rated at 12MW, The new system comprised of six panels for each
engine and includes AVR, governor and sequence control.
Allen Bradley ControLogix5000 PLC’s are used for control with local
PanelView HMI’s for operator control. In the main control room a dual
screen SCADA system has been installed for units 1and 2 with the
capability to be upgraded to include engines 3 and 4 at a later date.
MODA King Fahad Hospital – Control system and liquid fuel upgrade for three Rolls
Royce Olympus based gas turbine generators. Allen Bradley PLC
based controllers will be installed in the local control panels to
replace analogue electronic controllers and electro-mechanical relays.
The fuel system will be modified to fit the TCL Posiflow ® system,
which utilises a variable speed electric motor driving a fixed
displacement HP fuel pump
During the past few months a
number of control system upgrades have been installed and handed over
to the customer. These have included:-
Perenco Leman 27A AX Station -
On the latest upgrade of
the AX Station TCL have upgraded the existing station control panel
(SCP). The hardware supplied was Allen Bradley ControLogix5000 which
was programmed to perform the following functions:-
Cooler and fans control
Import valve monitoring
Station and ESD monitoring
Alarm and trip monitoring
TCL have also upgraded the
existing HMI mimics with additional screens to facilitate the AX
station functions and monitoring.

- The scope of this project was to replace the
existing gas turbine control and fuel system equipment fitted to the
TA1750 Generators with a new Allen Bradley ControLogix5000 PLC’s system
to provide Sequence Control, Governing and Protection functions
The following was provided:-
Local control panel
Fuel valve skid
AVR, with manual and auto
TCL also provided a touch screen
PanelView based HMI for control and monitoring.
